Frequently Asked Questions

As a coach, my role is to provide an impartial, non-judgmental space where you can gain clarity on your marriage, divorce, or broader life situation. We carefully examine what is currently effective and what areas need attention, and we explore how you want your life to feel and function ideally. I support you in thinking creatively to generate solutions that allow you to make progress in meaningful ways while maintaining a sense of purpose and empowerment.

Clients and coaches work together to identify the goals they want to achieve in their marriage, divorce process, or general life path. Once goals are clearly defined, we develop detailed action plans to move steadily toward those objectives. Along the way, I ask powerful and thought-provoking questions that help you uncover who you really are, what you deeply want, why your goals matter, and what internal or external blocks are preventing you from moving forward as you envision.

The purpose of therapy is to assist you in healing and recovering from events, trauma, and experiences that may have impacted your past, so that you can function more effectively in your current life. This is particularly important if depression, anxiety, or another diagnosis is impairing your ability to care for yourself, maintain employment, or interact successfully in personal relationships. Therapy provides the structure and guidance needed to restore emotional, mental, and behavioral balance.

Coaching, in contrast, focuses on the present and the future. It asks you to assess your current situation, consider what is working well and what is not, and envision a future that aligns with your values, goals, and personal aspirations. Coaching then involves creating strategies and actionable plans to help you move toward that future in a focused and intentional way.

A useful analogy to explain the difference between therapy and coaching is to consider the roles of a doctor and a physical trainer. A doctor is consulted when an illness, injury, or past condition prevents you from functioning at a healthy baseline. In comparison, a trainer works with individuals who are already functioning at a healthy level but want to optimize, enhance, or refine their performance, whether that is physical fitness, nutrition, or preparation for a goal such as competition.

Neither therapy nor coaching is inherently better than the other. They simply serve distinct purposes. Many coaching clients also work with therapists to ensure they are both processing and healing from past events while simultaneously taking intentional action to move toward their envisioned future.

From my years of professional and personal experience, it is clear that investing in support for yourself during marriage, divorce, or major life transitions is highly valuable and can be critical to achieving the future you envision. Whether you are preparing to wed, facing difficulties in your marriage, or moving through a divorce, coaching helps you gain insight into how you are currently showing up, individually and in relation to your partner or ex. It also allows you to clarify what you want your life to look like and identifies the most effective steps for moving toward your ideal outcome.

Coaching can save you both time and money by helping you prioritize actions that truly advance your goals. For example, many people assume they should rely entirely on their attorney when navigating a divorce. However, this often results in higher costs and longer timelines because attorneys provide legal guidance, not advice regarding your personal goals, emotional needs, relationships, or financial matters, and their rates are typically much higher than a coach’s.

Working with a coach ensures that you receive specialized support for the non-legal challenges you face. A coach can help you address emotional, relational, or financial concerns and can connect you with other qualified professionals as needed. This approach provides the most efficient and focused support possible, allowing you to move forward with clarity, confidence, and strategic guidance throughout major life transitions.

Divorce coaching is a rapidly growing field as more individuals seek compassionate, non-legal guidance during separation. Divorce can place tremendous strain on mental health, making it difficult to focus on personal priorities and long-term life goals. Having the support of a skilled coach allows individuals to stay centered and intentional during an otherwise turbulent period.

A divorce coach helps clients navigate the legal and emotional challenges of the family court system while maintaining perspective on their personal aspirations. High-conflict divorce coaching has gained popularity because it equips clients to handle highly complex interactions while gaining clarity on their specific goals, which is especially useful in cases involving disputes over children or finances.
